Prevalence estimation

How is the 5-year prevalence calculated?

The 5-year prevalence is the number of people alive on a given date who have had cancer or a specific cancer diagnosis within the previous five years. For the annual cancer prevalence data presented here, December 31 was set as the reference date. The prevalence was calculated according to the method of Pisani, Bray and Parkin from the nationwide incidence estimates and the absolute survival rates (by age, sex, cancer type and calendar year) calculated according to the Kaplan-Meier method. For survival calculations, data came from the same regions as those listed under the description of the "survival rates" methods.
